dec 2 & 5

We started at the conservatory to see the first exhibition “and again”. This exhibition was about the main cycles of human nature. They had works by a few different Mount A fine arts students and held the exhibition on campus which was very accessible. I thought the specific works they chose fit the theme really nicely and they had a number of different mediums. Each piece addressed a different cycle within human nature. I also really liked the choice of venue, in the conseritory, on the top floor where the space creates a circle, which relates back to the theme nicely.

Then we went to Hart Hall to talk about “Anthropogenic Atrophy”. This exhibition centered around themes of death and decay, they showcased lots of animal bones and sculpture pieces. I thought that Hart Hall was a good choice of venue because it’s an old “creepy” building that is slightly decaying itself. It was slightly cramped in there and also they didn’t have the full exhibition set up so I wasn’t able to see the end product, however what I did see I really enjoyed.

Then we went to my exhibition at the Roost Cafe, I was really happy that people liked it, it was slightly cramped in that space as well, however it was never intended to have a formal opening only people who enter the locations naturally throughout the day. And Anne bought everyone a drink which was very generous and much appreciated.

Finally, we went to “Sackville Gothic”, located at the Barn. I had never been to the barn before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect but I thought it was an interesting space and a very creative choice. It must have been hard to use this space so I thought they did a good job. I was a little unsure of the presentation, for example the large drawing tacked to wooden boards in the middle of winter. It looked nice but the idea of the fragile drawing being out exposed to the winter weather made me nervous. Another thought I had was that although the art works centred around one theme I don’t think they were very cohesive, and a few of them were hidden by the distracting architecture of the barn. For example, Olivia’s embroidery piece and Dawn’s sculpture. I am very impressed that they found a location and a theme that worked so well together and were able to manage setting everything up etc. I also really loved seeing Graeme Patterson’s work.
