Writing Prompt 3:

This week we were tasked to write about a personal object. We had to write 1-2 paragraphs about the object and my relationship to it. Then also consider “if you were to write a museum label that would make it interesting or tell this object's story.”

Small pink jewellery box with small white and red flower details. It is made out of thin wood with a metal clasp. Made approximately in 2014-2015 and given to me by my father in 2015.

This small box was given to me by my Dad when I was a little girl. It is a small, hand painted, wooden jewelry box with a music box inside. It is used more as a memory box rather than its intended purpose, it holds little Polaroid photographs, personalized messages cut out from birthday cards, and stolen hotel key cards from years past. There was always something special about this box, whether it was the little ballerina painted on top, the keepsakes that lived inside, or the fact that my Dad gave it to me for my birthday. This box was always one of my prized possessions.

This summer, there was a fire in my childhood home, almost everything was gone. When I was asked if there was anything of importance in my room, I thought of the box and all the memories kept inside. The fire was pretty substantial, so I wasn’t expecting anything to be salvageable however, to my surprise the very flammable small wooden jewellery box, that sat on my very flammable wooden dresser, was completely unaffected. What was once a cheap dollar store jewelry box from my childhood, is now the only physical piece that remains.
